America's Elo for years

The kings of chess in America between 2000 and 2023

Which American countries have been the most successful in chess in the last two decades? One way to measure the level of players and national teams is the élo scoring system, which assigns a number to each player based on his performance against other opponents. In this article, we are going to analyze the evolution of the average elo of the American countries from the year 2000 to December 2023, based on data from the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

If we look at the evolution of the average elo per year, we can see that the United States has been the most consistent country, maintaining sustained growth since 2000. With Cuba having ups and downs and a migration of its main young players. With Argentina (with ups and downs) and Peru growing in recent years and Brazil that has left its best years behind.

If you are passionate about chess, or simply want to learn more about this fascinating world, don't miss this article, which has been very difficult due to the scarcity of elo data in classic games from countries prior to 2015.

To prepare this publication, data will be taken from the following pages:

  •      Specialized websites
  •      Chess.com
  •      FIDE classification taking into account the average for the year.
  •      From the official FIDE website in December 2015 to 2023.

To calculate the elo of the countries, an average is made with the selection of the top 10 players classified according to the classification of the year according to FIDE. It should be noted that FIDE has changed the way of calculating players' elo and has implemented some modifications by inactivating players who remain for a year without playing an official match (this is reversed when they return to play), which is taken into account. counts in the 2015 statistics.

In conclusion, we can say that chess in America has had an uneven development, with some countries that have managed to consolidate themselves as world powers, such as the United States, Cuba and Canada, and others that have lost ground, such as Argentina.
