Asia Elo by years

The kings of chess in Asia between 2010 and 2023

Chess is an ancient game that originated in Asia, but has achieved great popularity and development throughout the world. In this article, we will explore how the level of Asian national teams has evolved over the last decade, using the elo rating system, which measures the performance of each player based on his results against other opponents. The data we will use comes from the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

According to the FIDE ranking of December 2023, the country with the highest average elo in Asia is India thanks to the talents that have accompanied its rise in recent years, followed by China, which presents the current World champion, and Azerbaijan. Uzbekistan has continued to advance at a constant pace and Armenia has been diminished among other things by the departure of Aronian.

If you are passionate about chess, or simply want to learn more about this fascinating world, don't miss this article, which has been very difficult due to the scarcity of elo data in classic games from countries prior to 2015.

To prepare this publication, data was taken from the following pages:

  •  Specialized websites
  •  Chess.com
  •  FIDE classification taking into account the average for the year.
  •  From the official FIDE website in December 2015 to 2023.

In conclusion, we can say that chess in Asia has had an uneven development, with some countries that have managed to consolidate themselves as world powers, such as China and India, and others that maintain vanguard positions, such as Uzbekistan. The average elo is only an indicator, which does not reflect all aspects of the game, but allows us to have an overview of the situation of chess on the Asian continent.
